Outdoor Fun

Today, I enjoyed the snow or was it my kids. Let me see.

Image of Winter SnowOMG a snowy day is the best day in a kid’s eye!  Bette, my youngest, woke up, ran to the window and screamed, “snow, snow, snow…I’ve been waiting for you! I’ve missed you.”

Those moments are what I love.

To catch a glimpse of that wondrous world that kids see.

That afternoon we bundled up the kids and set them loose in the back yard.  Even though the snow didn’t make the best snowballs, they managed to fling snow all over each other.  We have a tree house in the backyard – yes even in Brooklyn you can find a few hidden tree houses.

Jared, the oldest, hid out in the tree house while Bette and Miles tried to pummel him with snow.  I couldn’t tell who won, but I loved looking out the window and watching the joy on their faces.

We did not get time to go sledding before it melted but inside the parks of NYC are some great hills to sled on.  Next time you walk around the parks – starting looking for potential hills you could come back to.  Central Park and Prospect Park are loaded with fabulous hills and often on the first snow are staffed with park workers helping the kids.  Many times they pass out ribbons to the kids in celebrating the first snow day!

We love 2 hills in Prospect Park.

One hill is located inside the entrance at Prospect Park Southwest between 10th and 11th ave.  It’s a nice hill with plenty of space at the bottom to be safe for kids and adults of all ages.

Now if you walk up the hill there is a path that leads you into the woods.  This hill runs parallel with Prospect Park Southwest and is a narrow path lined with trees.  It’s a long run that only one or two can sled down at a time – but what fun the ride is.  With the trees on both side it tends to be exhilarating and a tad dangerous.  I would not recommend this hill for the young.  I take my daughter down the hill with me.  What a ride.  She loves it!  The best part is when your sled gets turned around and you fly down backwards!

Snow days… what do you do… or dream of doing??
